Painter in Cincinnati OH
This body of oil paintings aims to contrast the idea of “high art” against art that is used as a tool for commercialism. I shot photos of the marble statues located on the Las Vegas strip and Hearst Castle in San Simeon California, and painted them using the photos as reference. Each piece has two components. First, the marble statues are symbols that tell stories love, beauty and heroism. Second, each painting contains an advertisement. This comes in the form of neon signs, billboards, or sculptural structures. Both components are aesthetically pleasing, however they come from opposite worlds, modern and historic. I intend to provoke questions about these two separate forms of art, concerned with their differences and similarities.
